Last year, i.e. in 2024, cyber criminals defrauded Delhiites of around ₹1,100 crore, out of which only 10 per cent of the money was recovered in bank accounts. It is noteworthy that cases of cyber fraud are increasing in the country and across the world.
police appeal
DCP (Intelligence Fusion and Strategic Operations) Vineet Kumar urged victims of cyber fraud to report the matter immediately. He said that people should immediately report fraud on 1930. Once the crime is reported and details of the transaction are received, the process of seizing the defrauded funds is initiated.
These scams are the most common frauds
The most common frauds in Delhi are scams related to investment, digital arrest and boss scam. In investment scams, fraudsters lure people into withdrawing their money by promising high returns. In digital arrests, fraudsters pose as police or government officials and make video calls to people. They threaten to implicate them in false cases and extort money. Similarly, in the Boss Scam, fraudsters pose as senior executives of a company and contact people in charge of financial matters. They send fake messages and induce them to transfer money under the guise of corporate work.
Ways to avoid scams
Police have advised people not to join online investment groups and download apps or files from suspicious links. DCP Kumar said that if someone poses as a senior officer or boss and asks for money, then always investigate such cases. Avoid any such transactions without verification.
