“Pyaar Tera Delhi Ki Sardi” used to be a symbol of romance, but now on hearing the name of Delhi’s cold, people do not shudder but get scared. Not because of the temperature, but because of the mist that enters our bodies with every breath. The capital and its surrounding areas are once again wrapped in a blanket of poisonous smog. With the arrival of winter, this smoke mixed in the air is burning not only the eyes but also the lungs.
The situation in Delhi, Noida and Gurugram is so dire that people are no longer able to breathe peacefully even at home. Wearing masks while stepping out has become mandatory, and air purifiers have become a new companion indoors. But the problem is that the air has become so polluted that even the purifiers are not working. Many people have shared the condition of their air purifier filters on social media, which will leave you wondering what we are breathing.

Reddit user @missfinewine shared a picture and wrote, “I bought this air purifier two days before Diwali. And look at the condition its filter has reached in just a few days. We don’t run it 24 hours, but keep it covered while cleaning. Still, the filter has turned black. Imagine, there is so much dust and soot in the air that even the machine has died.” He further wrote, “My area is surrounded by greenery, trees and plants, yet the air is so dirty. Until I saw this filter, all I knew was pollution. Now when I can see with my own eyes what we are breathing, I am really scared.”
