A unique proposal has been prepared to give a new impetus to the development of infrastructure in Gurugram and to find a permanent solution to the traffic problem. To solve the problem of jam on Golf Course Extension Road and increase connectivity, Haryana Government and the local authority have sent an important suggestion to the Urban Development Ministry of the Central Government. Under this, there is a plan to build elevated road and metro line on the same pillar, which will not only save precious land but will also reduce the cost of the project considerably. If this proposal gets the Centre’s approval, it will be a revolutionary change in the city’s transport infrastructure.

‘Double decker’ system on a single pillar will change the picture of Golf Course Road, corridor will be built from Sector-56 to Panchgaon.

There is already a plan to build an elevated road from Sector-56 of the Golf Course Extension Road to Panchgaon, and there is also a proposal for metro extension on the same route. According to the current rules, separate pillars and separate land are required for elevated road and metro, which is quite expensive and space-consuming. The new proposal talks about designing a common pillar or structure. This means that there will be a ‘three-layer’ transport system on a single pillar—at the bottom the existing road will be for traffic, in the middle there will be an elevated road and at the top the metro line will pass.

There will be a huge decline of 15 to 20 percent in the cost of the project, the hassle of land acquisition and jam during construction will also be reduced.

According to the concept prepared, if the metro and elevated road are built on the same integrated pillar system, there can be a huge saving of 15 to 20 percent in the total cost of the project. Apart from this, the biggest relief will be regarding land acquisition, because very less land will be required for the common structure. The general public will benefit from this even during the construction work. Instead of digging separate pillars and foundations, work on a single structure will take up less space on the road, which will provide relief to people from traffic jams during construction.

Lakhs of people will get direct benefit from Sector 56 to Panchgaon, vehicle pressure will also reduce on NH-48 and Cyber City route.

Golf Course Extension Road and NH-48 are used by lakhs of people daily to commute towards Gurugram city, Cyber City and Delhi. The traffic pressure here is expected to increase further in the coming years. If the proposed metro line and elevated road are built on this common corridor, then the large population from Sector 56, 57, 58, 59, 60, 61 and further till Panchgaon and Manesar will be able to get direct metro facility. By getting this strong option of public transport, people will be less dependent on their cars, which will reduce both congestion and pollution on the roads.

Work on Detailed Project Report (DPR) will start as soon as the approval is received from the Centre, this model will become an example for other cities of the country as well.

At present this proposal is under consideration of the Urban Development Ministry. After receiving formal consent from the Ministry, the Detailed Project Report (DPR) will be reworked, which will include a complete analysis of structural design, safety standards and cost. Experts believe that if it gets approval from the Centre, this model will prove to be an example for other cities of the country as well. In cities where metro and elevated road are proposed in the same corridor, adopting this model will make the urban transport infrastructure more compact and economical.
