Guwahati, December 31 (IANS). Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Wednesday said the state government will further intensify its action against illegal immigration in 2026. He stressed that Assam will not be allowed to become a haven for undocumented foreign nationals.

In a post on social media platform

CM Sarma wrote, “In 2026, we will not relent at all in this effort and will send back even more people. Assam is not your breeding ground.” He also said that 18 illegal infiltrators were sent back across the border on Tuesday night.

The Chief Minister has repeatedly said that illegal infiltration is a serious threat to Assam’s demographic balance, social harmony and internal security. He said the state government is committed to protecting the rights of indigenous communities and implementing the law without any compromise.

Sarma had earlier said that infiltration has long been a major challenge for Assam, especially in the border districts, and alleged that previous governments had failed to resolve the issue decisively. He credited recent administrative measures, increased border surveillance and better coordination between state police and central security forces for the strong action on the ground.

The Chief Minister also reiterated that his government is committed to full implementation of the Assam Accord, which includes provisions related to identification, deletion and deportation of illegal foreigners. He stressed that protecting the cultural identity, land rights and demographic integrity of Assam remains the top priority of his administration.

This new push-back announcement comes at a time when the state is preparing for the 2026 assembly elections, in which infiltration and border security are expected to remain major political issues.

The BJP-led state government has consistently presented its tough stance on illegal immigration as a core policy position. Officials have indicated that intensified operations, strict surveillance in border areas and legal action against illegal entrants will continue in the coming months.
