New Delhi, January 4 (IANS). As soon as the winter season arrives, our skin first starts showing its effects. Cold air, less sunlight, bathing with hot water and lack of moisture, all these together make the skin dry, lifeless and stretched. In such a situation, most people resort to expensive body lotions, creams and moisturizers available in the market.
There are some traditional things which can work wonders in skin care in winter. One of these is mustard oil, which has been used in Ayurveda for centuries.
According to Ayurveda, mustard oil keeps the body warm. This is why its use in winter is especially beneficial for the skin. Science also believes that the fatty acids, vitamins and antioxidants present in mustard oil help in improving skin health. This oil is not just limited to moisturizing the skin, but also makes it strong and glowing from within.
In winter, cold air takes away the moisture from our skin, due to which the skin becomes dry and cracked. Mustard oil is thick and Vitamin E is found in abundance in it. When it is applied lightly on the skin, it penetrates deep into the skin and locks the moisture. Ayurveda believes that regular oil massage strengthens skin cells, while science says it helps in improving the skin barrier.
Mustard oil is also considered helpful in reducing the effects of aging. The omega-3 fatty acids and antioxidants present in it protect the skin from damaging free radicals. Free radicals are the elements due to which wrinkles and fine lines start appearing quickly. In Ayurveda, it is considered an oil that keeps the skin young, while scientifically it helps in maintaining the elasticity of the skin.
Itching, redness and minor skin infections also become common problems in winter. Mustard oil has natural anti-bacterial and anti-fungal properties. Regular application in small amounts reduces the chances of bacteria and fungus growing on the skin.
In winter, skin can become dull and dark due to sunlight. It is believed in Ayurveda that mustard oil improves blood circulation. When lightly massaged on the face or body, blood flow increases, giving the skin a natural glow. Science also believes that better blood circulation provides more nutrition to the skin cells.
