New Delhi. Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana (SSY) completes 11 years on Thursday. This scheme of the Central Government has played an important role in the empowerment of girls. This has not only helped in creating a secure future for the girls, but has also contributed a lot in instilling confidence in the girls. SSY was launched on 22 January 2015 under the Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao campaign. It is a low-risk deposit scheme, in which the principal is guaranteed by the government and the interest is paid annually as per fixed rates every quarter. Its objective is to meet the expenses of girls’ education and marriage. By promoting education, economic security and self-reliance, this initiative strengthens women’s empowerment and contributes to the vision of future self-reliance. Currently, the interest rate under Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana is 8.2 percent. Under SSY, parents or legal guardians can open an account for their girl child in any Indian Post Office or branch of any public sector bank and authorized private sector banks (HDFC Bank, Axis Bank, ICICI Bank and IDBI Bank). This account can be opened any time from the birth of the girl child till the age of 10 years. Only one SSY account of a girl child can be opened and a family can open accounts for a maximum of two girl children. However, in case of twins or triplets, opening of more than two accounts is permitted on submission of an affidavit along with the relevant birth certificate. This account can be transferred to any place in India.
The special thing about this scheme is that until the girl child turns 18, the account is managed by the parents/guardian. This allows parents to monitor savings and ensure that the funds are being used effectively for the girl child’s education and future needs. Upon turning 18, the account holder can take control of the account herself by submitting the required documents.
According to the government, so far 4.53 crore SSY accounts have been opened in the country. A total amount of more than Rs 3.33 lakh crore is deposited in these accounts. Apart from this, the Beti Bachao Beti Padhao campaign was started by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on January 22, 2015. The main objective of this scheme is to secure the birth of girls, end discrimination against them and promote their education.
This includes improving the sex ratio, increasing enrollment of girls in schools and developing positive thinking towards daughters in the society. This scheme is run in collaboration with the Ministries of Women and Child Development, Education and Health and is considered an important step towards the empowerment of the girl child.
