India’s Clean Tree on Oil Purchases: During the weekly briefing of the Ministry of External Affairs in New Delhi, Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal clarified India’s position on oil purchases from Russia and Venezuela.

He said that the biggest priority of the government is to ensure energy security of 1.4 billion Indians. India takes its decisions keeping this goal in mind.

Reply to the claim of reducing oil purchases from Russia

During the briefing, a question was asked about the claim of former USA President Donald Trump that India would stop buying oil from Russia and would buy crude oil from America and Venezuela.

On this Randhir Jaiswal clearly said that there has been no such change in India’s policy.

Energy security is the top priority of the government

The spokesperson of the Ministry of External Affairs reiterated that the Government of India has publicly stated several times that energy security is of paramount importance.

He said that considering the current market conditions and rapidly changing international scenario, India takes practical steps to secure its energy needs.

India’s strategy to diversify energy sources

Randhir Jaiswal said that the main basis of India’s energy policy is to diversify energy sources. This means that India is not completely dependent on any one country or region.

Oil and energy resources are purchased from different countries as per the need, so that the needs of the country are continuously met.

Same stance on Russia and Venezuela

He clarified that there has been no change in India’s stand on purchasing oil from Russia and Venezuela. India has been taking decisions keeping in mind its national interests in the past and will continue to take steps in the interest of the countrymen.

Balancing tariffs and international pressure

Randhir Jaiswal also indicated that India does not change its energy policy based on changes in international tariffs or pressure from any country. The government’s focus is only that the country continues to get cheap and safe energy.

It is clear from the statement of the Ministry of External Affairs that India is completely clear and self-reliant regarding its energy policy.

The decision to purchase oil from Russia, Venezuela or any other country is taken only keeping in mind national interest and energy security. The government’s message is clear—the needs of the countrymen come first.
