MP Gurjit Singh Aujla on Wednesday defended Lok Sabha opposition leader Rahul Gandhi’s remarks on Union Minister Ravneet Singh Bittu, saying Gandhi was absolutely right to call him a “traitor”. “Rahul Gandhi was absolutely right to call him a traitor… You should first ask the Sikhs of Punjab whether he is a Sikh…” he said.
Responding to the controversy, Aujla said that Bittu left the party at a critical time when the country was facing a “dictatorial force”. Speaking to the media here, Aujla said, “What happened today at Makar Dwar shows that a Congress leader, to whom the party gave everything, left the party at a time when a dictatorial force was growing in the country. And in whose lap did he sit? Of a dictator, of the BJP.”
Expressing similar views, Congress MP and former Punjab Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi said that Gandhi had only stated the facts. Channi asked “Rahul Gandhi told Ravneet Singh Bittu that he is a traitor who left the Congress party during the elections when it needed it the most. If he is not a traitor, then what is he?”.
The incident follows a heated argument between Lok Sabha opposition leader Rahul Gandhi and Union Minister of State for Railways Ravneet Singh Bittu outside Parliament on Wednesday, in which Lok Sabha opposition leader Rahul Gandhi called Bittu a “traitor”.
Passing by Congress MPs protesting at the Makar Gate of Parliament, Rahul Gandhi called Ravneet Bittu a “traitor”. Rahul Gandhi’s comments come after Ravneet Bittu resigned from Congress and joined BJP ahead of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. Gandhi said, “Look, a traitor is passing in front of me. Look at his face.”
The Congress leader offered a handshake and said, “Hello brother, my traitor friend. Don’t worry, you will come back to the Congress.” The Union Minister of State refused to shake hands and called Rahul an “enemy of the country”. The altercation started when Ravneet Bittu commented on the protesting MPs and said, “They are sitting as if they have won a war.
