Jerusalem. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio on Monday assured Washington’s “unwavering support” to the military campaign in Gaza during a visit to Israel and demanded Hamas’s elimination.
At a joint press conference with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in Jerusalem, Rubio said, “Gaza can become a better future, but it is not possible until Hamas is eliminated. You can rely on our unwavering support and commitment.”
Netanyahu called Rubio’s journey “a message of clear support of Washington”.
Rubio also criticized western countries who have recently announced recognition to Palestine. He said, “Such decisions are mere symbolic and their real effect is nothing. On the contrary, it gives more courage to Hamas.”
Prior to the meeting, Rubio had said that he would discuss the “goals and objectives” of the military campaign in Gaza with Netanyahu.
When asked about the displeasure of the Gulf countries on the death of six people in the Israeli air strike in Doha last week, Rubio said, “What will be our attention next, it is on it.” The attack was reportedly carried out on Hamas’s talks team involved in the Gaza ceasefire talks, but could not reach its target.
Meanwhile, Israel has intensified attacks on Gaza City. On Sunday, Army Radio said that so far about 3 lakh people have migrated from Gaza City. The Israeli army on Monday bombed another tall building and claimed that these buildings were being used for Hamas intelligence activities.
Israel says its goal is to establish control over Gaza City, demolish Hamas and get rid of about 50 people held hostage by the group.
