Kolkata, March 23 (IANS). Leader of the Opposition (LoP) in the West Bengal Assembly Suvendu Adhikari on Monday confirmed that the victim’s parents have taken basic membership of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
However, he further said that the party leadership has not yet decided whether any of them will be made the party candidate from Panihati assembly constituency in North 24 Parganas district.
The BJP has published two lists of candidates for next month’s West Bengal Assembly elections, but has not yet announced its candidate from Panihati.
The opposition leader said on Monday night that the central leadership of our party will decide whether any member of the victim’s family will be made a candidate from Panihati or not. The state committee has sent its opinion in this matter to the central leadership, which I cannot disclose right now. Now the final decision in this matter is in the hands of the central leadership of our party.
It is noteworthy that the body of the victim (female doctor) was recovered from the RG Kar premises on the morning of August 9, 2024. Kolkata Police started investigating the case and arrested the only accused in the case, Sanjay Roy, a former civilian volunteer of the city police.
Later, following the order of the Calcutta High Court, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) took over the investigation of the case and the central agency also identified Sanjay Roy as the sole accused in the crime of rape and murder.
Later, the Kolkata trial court sentenced Roy to life imprisonment, finding him the sole convict in the crime. Subsequently, the CBI challenged this order in the Calcutta High Court and sought death penalty for Roy.
