Mehbooba Mufti, the head of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), on Thursday claimed that he was placed under house arrest to prevent the death of former Hurriyat Conference Abdul Gani Bhat to mourn Sopore to mourn the death of Abdul Gani Bhat.
Mehbooba said in a post on ‘X’, “The decision to prevent us from going to Sopore to mourn the demise of Professor Abdul Gani Bhat today highlights the harsh and undemocratic reality of Jammu and Kashmir.”

Mehbooba also recently mentioned the dispute in the Hazratbal Dargah. On September 5, there was a big ruckus after a plank with Ashoka sign was demolished at the Dargah. Several political parties accused Waqf Board Chairperson Darkshan Andrabi of hurting religious sentiments, as the national symbol was used in the mosque. Mehbooba said, ‘What happened in the Hazratbal Dargah was an easy and clear message of people’s anger. This was not just an incident, but it was the voice of those who have been living under pressure and sorrow for years. Targeting the Bharatiya Janata Party, Mufti said that BJP is not interested in peace and reconciliation in Kashmir.
Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, the current chairman of the Hurriyat Conference, also claimed to be under house arrest from late Wednesday. He wrote on X, ‘I have been closed in my house, due to which I could not join Professor Bhat’s funeral. It is very sad for me that I did not get a chance to support him in his last journey. Mirwaiz said that he had a 35 -year friendship with Professor Bhat. He further said, ‘Professor Saheb’s family was forced to fulfill his funeral in a hurry. Many people wanted to give him a last farewell.
