Johnny Lever has created a unique identity for himself in the industry due to his excellent comic timing and powerful performance. He has given tremendous performances not only across the country but also abroad, bringing lots of laughter to audiences everywhere; However, the journey of his life was not easy at all. At the age of 13, he had to go through such a difficult phase that he even thought of committing suicide.

Forced to leave studies after 7th class
Born on August 14, 1957 in Prakasam, Andhra Pradesh, Johnny Lever grew up in an ordinary Telugu Christian family. His father worked as an operator at Hindustan Unilever—a company where Johnny Lever later worked for a time. Eventually, his family settled in the cramped slums of Dharavi, Mumbai, where everyday life was full of struggles. Due to financial constraints, Johnny Lever had to leave Andhra Education Society English High School after completing 7th class.

To bear the responsibility of his family, he started doing odd jobs at a very young age—this was the beginning of his journey of struggle. On the crowded streets of Mumbai, Johnny used to sell lever pens and also entertain the passers-by. He would mimic Bollywood stars and dance to their songs, which would bring smiles and laughter to the faces of people around him.

**Attempted suicide at the age of 13
During this time, the artist within him started emerging. These small, impromptu performances later became the strong foundation of his comedy career as he began to receive attention and praise. At around the age of 13, Johnny Lever suffered a lot of mental stress due to his father’s alcohol addiction. During this difficult period, he was so devastated by his problems that once he walked to the railway track and tried to commit suicide. Later, in an interview with Ranveer Allahbadia, he revealed that at that very moment, the thought of his three sisters came to his mind—a thought that stopped him in his tracks. In that one moment, he decided to embrace life and instead of giving up, he was determined to move forward. It was while working in Hindustan Unilever that Johnny Lever got his first big opportunity to showcase his talent. During a company event, he amused his colleagues by mimicking his senior officers. People liked his style so much that at the same time he got the name ‘Johnny Lever’ – a name which later became his identity. Even while working a regular job, he never stopped doing stage shows. Gradually, people started liking his style of comedy, and he gradually managed to make his mark as a well-known comedian.

In an interview, Johnny Lever revealed how he finally decided to leave his regular job and completely step into the world of entertainment. By that time, he was earning a good amount of money from stage shows and advertisements, and had also completed a special project with Shekhar Kapur. As a result, he decided that now was the right time to quit his job and focus completely on honing his talent. Although his father was concerned about his job security, Johnny Lever chose his passion and dedicated himself completely to the entertainment world.

**How he got his first break**
Even before making his debut in films, Johnny Lever had already made his mark as one of the country’s earliest stand-up comedians. He entertained audiences not only across India but also internationally through live shows. His first big tour was with Amitabh Bachchan in 1982. It was during this tour that she was noticed by veteran actor Sunil Dutt at a show; Impressed by his talent, Dutt offered him a role in the film *Dard Ka Rishta*.

After that opportunity, Johnny Lever’s career gained tremendous momentum. He worked in more than 350 films and made a name for himself as one of the country’s most favorite comedians. His comedy has brought smiles on the faces of audiences across generations. According to reports, this success has also made him financially strong. Today, he is a millionaire; According to reports his net worth is around ₹277 crore. The actor was last seen in the film *Housefull 5*.
