Shreyas Iyer: There is a lot of discussion these days about the T20 captaincy of Team India. According to reports, the selectors are now considering handing over the T20 captaincy to a new player in place of the current captain Suryakumar Yadav. Devang Gandhi, a former Indian player and selector, believes that Shreyas Iyer’s name is leading in the race to lead the T20 team in place of Suryakumar.
Questions raised on Suryakumar Yadav’s form
Devang Gandhi while talking with ‘IANS’ said that Iyer has captaincy experience. “I think there are still two years left for the Olympics,” he said. Are the selectors looking at him even after two years? So, that’s the big question. Look, the competition is very tough. Everyone has to perform well and many players are performing well. Shreyas is continuously doing well. Rajat Patidar is also showing a strong performance. Rajat’s performance as captain in the last two years has been excellent. I think Suryakumar’s batting form is a matter of concern and I think it’s time to move on from him.”
Shreyas Iyer described as a strong contender
The former selector further said, “You always want a captain who has experience, whether it is international cricket experience or IPL experience. I think the way Shreyas is captaining the Punjab Kings and he has earlier made Kolkata Knight Riders the champion, so according to me he is the frontrunner to become the T20 captain. If he gets a chance, he deserves it.”
Suggest names for vice captaincy also
Devang Gandhi says that if Shreyas Iyer is given the responsibility of captaincy, then either Tilak Verma or Ishan Kishan should also be made the vice-captain. He said that according to me, Ishan Kishan would be a better option as vice-captain. Ishaan was seen captaining Sunrisers Hyderabad in the initial matches of IPL 2026. Along with this, Jharkhand also won the Syed Mushtaq Ali Tournament under his leadership.
