According to the legend, demon king Hiranyakashyap obtained the boon of immortality by pleasing Lord Brahma by performing rigorous penance. He asked for a boon that he should neither die from humans, nor from animals, nor die inside or outside the house, nor from any weapon. There was also a mysterious condition in this boon that he should not die in any of the 12 months created by Brahma. After receiving this boon from Brahma, Hiranyakashyap started considering himself as God. The biggest enemy for him was Lord Vishnu. Due to extreme hatred towards the devotees of Lord Vishnu, Hiranyakashyap tried several times to end the life of his devotee son Prahlad.
Narasimha Avatar and more months
To end the terror of Hiranyakashipu, God took the incarnation of Narasimha. But to kill him, one more month was required in addition to the 12 months created by Brahma. On this, 11 extra days every year arising from the difference in the movement of Sun and Moon, were collected every three years and created as Adhik Maas, in this month Lord Vishnu resides in the form of Lord Vishnu every third year. In this Adhik month itself, Shri Hari Vishnu took the incarnation of Narasimha and killed Hiranyakashyap with his nails to protect the devotees.
Vishnu gave his name ‘Purushottam’
12 months of the year are created by Brahma, but more months appeared by the grace of Lord Vishnu. Due to absence of Surya Sankranti in this month, this month was despised from all sides, not only the planets but also no deity took the month under their protection. Due to this, this month started being considered prohibited for auspicious rites and auspicious works and started being counted as Malmas i.e. dirty month, then Adhik Maas expressed his sorrow to Lord Vishnu and pleaded that I have been created to perform virtuous work, yet I am so despised that no worship, chanting, fasting is resolved in this month, and I am remembered in a dirty form. Lord Vishnu was moved by this and accepted him himself and gave him the name ‘Purushottam’. In this way it became the best month out of 12 months. The glory of Purushottam month is infinite and provides salvation by the grace of Lord Vishnu, this month is very dear to Lord Vishnu, the chanting, penance, fasting and charity done in it destroys all the sins and provides salvation.
