Chandigarh. National Commission for Women (NCW) Chairperson Vijaya Kishore Rahatkar on Tuesday paid a courtesy visit to the Governor of Punjab and Administrator of Union Territory Chandigarh, Gulab Chand Kataria at Punjab Lok Bhawan, Chandigarh. During the meeting, both the dignitaries discussed various issues related to women welfare, women empowerment and women safety. The growing problem of drug abuse, especially among girls and women, and the need for targeted and effective interventions to tackle this emerging social challenge were discussed. He stressed the importance of strengthening awareness campaigns, preventive measures, counseling services and rehabilitation facilities for girls and women affected by drug addiction. Also, the need for coordinated efforts of government agencies, educational institutions, social organizations and various stakeholders of the community to ensure rehabilitation and reintegration into the mainstream of society was also highlighted.
The important role of mothers and women in the family in drug prevention was also discussed in detail in the meeting. It was emphasized that mothers are often the first to recognize changes in children’s behavior and can make an important contribution in preventing drug addiction through timely guidance, intervention and creation of a positive family environment. To make the anti-drug campaign effective, the need to empower mothers through awareness and community participation programs was also stressed.
Governor Kataria appreciated the efforts being made by the National Commission for Women to protect women’s rights and promote gender equality. He said that saving young girls and women from the problem of drug addiction and ensuring effective rehabilitation system for them should be included in the priorities of the society. He described the role of mothers as a strong driving force of social change and described them as extremely important in building a drug-free society.
