Southampton, June 16 (). Sri Lanka won against New Zealand by 5 wickets in the 7th match of the Women’s T20 World Cup 2026 played at The Rose Bowl on Tuesday. With this, Sri Lanka, present in ‘Group B’, has opened its account of victory, while New Zealand had to face defeat for the second consecutive match.
After winning the toss and opting to bat, the New Zealand team scored 150 runs after losing 6 wickets in the stipulated overs. This team got the first blow in the form of Isabelle Gage (4) for just 4 runs. From here, captain Amelia Kerr along with Georgia Plimmer took over the innings by adding 49 runs in 46 balls for the second wicket.
Plimmer was out after scoring 18 runs in 22 balls, after which Kerr added 43 runs in 26 balls for the third wicket with Sophie Devine. Kerr scored 45 runs in 36 balls. His innings included 5 fours.
After this Sophie Devine took charge. She scored 45 runs in 30 balls with 5 boundaries, while Maddy Green remained unbeaten on 18 runs. From the opposition camp, Kashvi Dilhari took 2 wickets, while Mithali Ayodhya, Sugandhika Kumari, Chamri Atapattu and Nimasha Meepage took 1 wicket each.
In response, the Sri Lankan team won the match in 19.4 overs. Captain Chamri Atapattu made a partnership of 45 runs with Vishmi Gunaratne (17) in 5.5 overs. Atapattu was out after scoring 27 runs in 19 balls with 1 six and 4 fours.
After this the team kept losing wickets at regular intervals. The situation was such that Sri Lanka had lost 4 wickets till the score of 55 in 8.3 overs. From here Kashvi Dilhari along with Nilakshika Silva scored 49 runs in 39 balls.
Kashvi returned to the pavilion after contributing 17 runs to the team’s account, after which Nilakshika made an unbroken partnership of 48 runs in 28 balls with Kaushani Nutyangana to give the team a thrilling victory. For New Zealand, Nancy Patel took 2 wickets for 23 runs, while Bree Illing took 1 wicket.
