The 1974 World Cup was a symbol of one such change. A brand new trophy was unveiled for the first time in this tournament. After Brazil permanently retained the Jules Rimé Trophy, FIFA created a new gold trophy named the ‘FIFA World Cup Trophy’. It was designed by Italian sculptor Silvio Gazzaniga. Even today the same trophy is given to the winning team.
If the 1970 World Cup was a celebration of talent, imagination and individual skill, the 1974 World Cup was a manifesto of strategy, organization and collective intelligence. West Germany got the hosting of the World Cup. West Germany, which had rebuilt after the war, had now established itself among the major economic powers of Europe. The ‘Miracle of Bern’ in 1954 had given him confidence. They were now counted among the most organized powers in world football. The group stage of this tournament also witnessed a historic and political contest. Amidst the tension of the Cold War, the teams of East Germany and West Germany faced each other on the field. This was the only such match in sports history. East Germany surprised the whole world by defeating West Germany 1-0 in this match.
But the biggest story of this World Cup was not host Germany. Everyone’s eyes were on another team. Netherlands.And even more so on one player. ‘Johan Cruyff’. If Pelé was football’s artist, Cruyff was its philosopher. They didn’t just play. He used to think about sports. There was a thought hidden in his every action on the field. He could have scored. Could have scored goals. Could control the pace of the game and operate the entire field as per his vision. In this tournament, Cruyff gave a new magical move to football. He performed ‘Cruyff Turn’ for the first time in the match against Sweden. Seeing this dribbling move, the opposing defender was completely turned in the air. But Cruyff’s greatness was not limited to individual talent alone. He was a symbol of a revolution. The name of that revolution was – ‘Total Football’. The idea of Total Football was developed by Dutch club ‘Ajax’ and coach Rinus Michels. Its basic principle was simple. But implementation is extremely difficult. No player will be limited to any one position. The defender can attack.
The attacker can defend. The midfielder can reach any area. If a player leaves his position another player will take his place.
The entire field would function like a living system. This idea was revolutionary at the time. The world had never seen football like this before. The World Cup started and the Netherlands began to surprise their opponents. Their players constantly changed positions. They controlled the game even without the ball.
His pace, pressing and passing challenged conventional football thinking. Cruyff was the center of this entire system. The audience felt as if they were present in several places at once. Sometimes in defence. Sometimes in the central region. Sometimes in attack. He was visible everywhere on the field. West Germany, on the other hand, also had an extraordinary leader.
‘Franz Beckenbauer’. He was later called ‘Der Kaiser’ i.e. ‘Emperor’. Beckenbauer gave new heights to the role of ‘Libero’. They were not just protectors. They controlled the game from the back.
He had a wonderful combination of leadership, technology and strategic understanding. If Cruyff was the ideologue of modern football, Beckenbauer was its commander. Brazil, which had ruled world football between 1958, 1962 and 1970, was now facing the challenge of a new generation.

And what happened shocked the whole world. The German players had not even touched the ball yet and the Netherlands got a penalty. This was the first penalty in the history of the World Cup final. Before this, penalty was not given in any final.
Cruyff ran with the ball. They were stopped. The referee immediately gave a penalty. Johan Neeskens scored the goal. Only one minute had passed. The Netherlands were leading 1-0.
The stadium was stunned. But Germany did not panic. Gradually he started establishing control over the game. Germany also got a penalty before half-time. Paul Brightner equalised. Now the competition had opened again. After some time, Gerd Müller found his opportunity. Müller was counted among the most lethal strikers of that era.
He did not waste the opportunity. Germany went ahead 2–1. This goal proved to be Gerd Müller’s last goal in international football. With this goal, he became the most successful scorer in World Cup history (total 14 goals). This record of his remained unbroken for the next 32 years.
In the second half, Netherlands applied continuous pressure. His passing was amazing. His speed was fantastic. But the German defense stood firm. Finally the final whistle blew. West Germany had become world champion. With this victory, after West Germany coach Sepp Herberger, the new coach Helmut Schön created history. He became the first coach to make his team win first the European Championship and then the World Cup.
The biggest paradox in football history was at hand. The team that showed the world the most beautiful and most modern football had lost. The team that played more practical and effective football won. That’s why the 1974 World Cup is not remembered only for the winner. It is also remembered for the defeated team.
Many experts still believe that the Netherlands was the most dominant team of the 1974 World Cup. He changed the concept of the game. He showed that football is not just a game of individual talent.
