Guwahati, June 24 (IANS). Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Wednesday said that many government medical colleges and hospitals in the state have received accreditation from the ‘National Accreditation Board for Hospitals and Healthcare Providers’ (NABH). This is an important step towards making healthcare services uniform and better in government health institutions.

In a post on social media, the Chief Minister said that the state government had directed all medical colleges in Assam to seek NABH accreditation. Its objective is to set uniform standards for healthcare services in government hospitals and improve patient care.

He informed that five big medical institutions have already received NABH accreditation. These include Guwahati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH), Tezpur Medical College and Hospital, Assam Medical College and Hospital (AMCH), Barpeta’s Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed Medical College and Hospital (FAAMCH) and Jorhat Medical College and Hospital (JMCH).

The Chief Minister said that this accreditation reflects adherence to nationally recognized standards in areas such as patient safety, quality of care, hospital management, clinical protocols and healthcare infrastructure.

He also informed that the inspection work at Silchar Medical College and Hospital has been completed and the institute is still waiting for the outcome of the accreditation process.

Chief Minister Sarma said that apart from medical colleges, two ‘Critical Care Assam Centres’ located in Dibrugarh and Lakhimpur have also received NABH certification. He also said that more healthcare facilities are expected to be included in this list in the coming months.

According to officials, NABH accreditation is considered one of the most important quality certifications for healthcare institutions in the country.

It helps hospitals increase operational efficiency, achieve better patient outcomes and maintain global standards in medical services.

The Assam government is also focusing on enhancing the healthcare infrastructure as well as improving the quality of service in government hospitals.

Over the past few years, the state has created new medical colleges, increased MBBS seats and strengthened specialized healthcare facilities in the districts.

A senior official said that increasing NABH accreditation in government hospitals will increase people’s confidence in the healthcare system and help in the state’s larger goal of providing easily accessible, affordable and good quality medical services to the people.
