Kolkata, July 6 (IANS). West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari, on the occasion of the 125th birth anniversary of Bharatiya Jan Sangh founder Shyama Prasad Mukherjee, announced that from now on a chapter on Mukherjee’s life will be included in the school syllabus.
The Chief Minister made this announcement while addressing a program organized to celebrate the 125th birth anniversary of the founder of Bharatiya Jan Sangh at Mitra Institution on Monday afternoon.
The Chief Minister said, “Syama Prasad Mukherjee’s contribution must be mentioned in the school syllabus. I have requested the state School Education Minister, Higher Education Minister and department secretaries in this matter. I will place this request and proposal before the syllabus committee to be formed in the coming days, which will ultimately decide what should be included in the school syllabus and what not.”
Meanwhile, the birth anniversary of Syama Prasad Mukherjee was celebrated for the first time on Monday at the State Secretariat ‘Nabanna’. Despite it being a public holiday, a group of state government employees reached the state secretariat and paid homage to the statue of the Bharatiya Jana Sangh founder by offering flowers.
This year, the state government had taken several initiatives to commemorate the birth anniversary of Syama Prasad Mukherjee. One of those initiatives was the laying of the foundation stone and unveiling of a plaque for a 125-foot tall statue of Syama Prasad at Echo Park in New Town on the northern outskirts of Kolkata.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah, who reached Kolkata on Monday afternoon, laid the foundation stone. On this occasion, Chief Minister, Union Culture Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat and West Bengal State BJP President and party’s Rajya Sabha member Samik Bhattacharya were present.
Union Home Minister Shah went straight to Eco Park after landing at Kolkata’s Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose International Airport this afternoon.
