Kolkata, July 11 (IANS). Former Trinamool Congress (TMC) councilor of Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) Ward-129 Anjan Das and his aide Bhola Sarkar have been arrested for allegedly assaulting, threatening to kill and torturing a pregnant woman. Police gave this information on Saturday.
According to the police, complainant Vijaya Ghosh has alleged that in the year 2020, her family was attacked and threatened several times due to political enmity for being BJP supporters. She said in her complaint that despite being pregnant at that time, Anjan Das had kicked her in the stomach. He also used to reach their house and threaten to kill the family members.
Vijaya Ghosh alleges that after this incident the entire family started going through severe mental stress. He claimed that due to mental torture, his father-in-law had even attempted suicide.
After the change of government in the state, Vijaya Ghosh recently lodged a written complaint at Paranshree police station. Based on the complaint, the police started investigation and on Saturday arrested former councilor Anjan Das and his associate Bhola Sarkar.
After his arrest, Anjan Das was taken to Vidyasagar Hospital for medical examination. During this, BJP workers and supporters along with local people surrounded the police vehicle outside the hospital and raised slogans of “thief-thief”. However, the police of Paranshree police station immediately intervened and controlled the situation.
The complainant demanded strict and example-setting punishment against the accused and said that such incidents should not be repeated in future.
It is noteworthy that after the change of power in the state, more than a dozen former TMC councilors of Kolkata Municipal Corporation have been arrested in extortion, criminal intimidation, molestation and other cases. Not only in Kolkata, similar action has been taken against many TMC councilors and leaders in different parts of the state.
