New Delhi, July 12 (IANS). Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnav announced that India’s first bullet train service will start in a phased manner from August 15, 2027 and the Surat-Bilimora section of the Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail (MAHSR) corridor will become the country’s first high-speed rail route.

The 508 km long Mumbai-Ahmedabad Bullet Train Corridor will be commissioned in a phased manner, allowing some parts of the project to become operational even before the entire route is completed. After the commencement of the Surat-Bilimora section, the remaining sections – such as Vapi-Surat, Vapi-Ahmedabad, Ahmedabad-Thane and Ahmedabad-Mumbai will be opened gradually.

Giving information about the high-speed rail corridor, Railway Ministry Vaishnav said that India’s first bullet train project has reached its next phase. Work on the Mumbai-Ahmedabad high-speed rail corridor is underway and will be launched in phases, starting with the Surat-Bilimora section.

The Railway Minister said that about 80 percent work of this big project has been completed and the construction is going on at a fast pace to complete the work within the stipulated time. The Mumbai–Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail Corridor is India’s first high-speed rail project. This will significantly reduce the travel time between these two economic centres, will also bring in modern rail technology and improve regional connectivity. The project is also expected to boost economic development along the corridor.

Vaishnaw also spoke about the Centre’s long-term plans to expand the country’s high-speed rail network and announced three proposed bullet train corridors with Hyderabad at the centre. These include Pune-Hyderabad, Hyderabad-Chennai and Hyderabad-Bengaluru routes, which are expected to improve connectivity in South India. He also informed that there are plans for Hyderabad-Mumbai high-speed rail link, which will significantly reduce the travel time between these two cities.

“Prime Minister Narendra Modi has given three high-speed bullet train corridors to Hyderabad, which will change the face of the city,” Vaishnav said. He further said that the proposed network will cover large parts of Telangana and improve connectivity between several districts of the state.
