Mumbai, July 14 (IANS). Maharashtra Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) state president Sunil Tatkare on Tuesday said that the election of Sunetra Pawar as the national president of the party is completely legal and it has been done in accordance with the party constitution and prescribed rules. He rejected speculations of any kind of infighting in the party.
Tatkare’s statement comes after former national secretary Sachchidanand Singh sent a legal notice challenging the election of Sunetra Pawar.
Talking to journalists, Tatkare said that the election of the top leadership of the party was done with complete transparency and all the constitutional provisions and democratic processes of the organization were followed.
He said that the legal notice received by the party will be responded to as per due legal process, but all the allegations made in it are completely baseless and an attempt is being made to create controversy in the party.
Tatkare said, “There is no division or difference of opinion in the party. Sunetra Pawar’s election as national president has been done in accordance with the rules and constitution of the organization.”
According to party sources, the NCP leadership is viewing this legal notice as a personal grievance rather than any major organizational crisis and says that the entire organization is united with the new national president.
Sachchidanand Singh had sent a legal notice to Sunetra Pawar, National Working President Praful Patel and National General Secretary Brijmohan Srivastava on July 9. Srivastava is also the party’s nodal officer for the Election Commission.
The notice demands that the entire process of election of the National President be declared illegal, non-existent and cancelled.
Singh claims that according to party records dated 17 February 2026, after the death of Ajit Pawar, National Working President Praful Patel was to take over the responsibility of interim National President. But instead on 18 February 2026, National General Secretary Brijmohan Srivastava passed a proposal to call a national convention and start the process of electing a permanent president without following the party constitution.
Prafulla Patel also said that there is no difference of opinion in the party and all the senior leaders sit with Sunetra Pawar and discuss political issues.
He said that Sachchidanand Singh’s letter does not hold any special importance and in the interest of the party, all issues should be resolved through mutual talks. Patel said that he has nothing to do with this legal notice and the election of Sunetra Pawar is completely in accordance with the party constitution.
