Congress Rajya Sabha member Pawan Khera on Friday met social activist Sonam Wangchuk at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar, where Wangchuk is on an indefinite hunger strike. During the meeting, he urged Wangchuk and his fellow protesters not to risk their lives. Kheda told that Congress General Secretary (Organization) K.C. Venugopal had also expressed concern on social media on Thursday. He had said that the method of protest against the insensitive government should not be such that the lives of the protesters are put in danger.

Referring to the governments of Indira Gandhi and Manmohan Singh, Khera said, “Smt. Indira Gandhi did this in 1984. Dr. Manmohan Singh’s government did the same in 2011. They understood that the main responsibility of the government is to negotiate, even if there are differences; however, this government has chosen the path of silence. It has refused to discuss the demands for education reforms – even if those demands are made by Rahul Gandhi and across the country.” Whether raised by NSUI/IYC workers or protesters at Jantar Mantar, such indifference is not just arrogance; it is insensitivity and not at all appropriate for democracy.” He said that on behalf of the Congress, he met Sonam Wangchuk and the protesters at Jantar Mantar and urged them to end their hunger strike in view of their deteriorating health. No movement is strengthened by the death of its own people; We must survive to continue the fight. Aam Aadmi Party national convenor Arvind Kejriwal also visited Jantar Mantar on Thursday. Speaking from the stage of the protest, he stressed the need to reform the country’s education and examination system.

Regarding Sonam Wangchuk, who is on hunger strike, Kejriwal said that she is not fighting for herself but for the future of the youth and students of the country. He said that when a student appears for a competitive exam, he goes not just to pass the exam but with the hope of fulfilling his dreams. Students are confident that their future will be built by their hard work, dedication and skills; But, repeated incidents of paper leaks have shaken this trust to a great extent.

Kejriwal said that he is an alumnus of IIT and his own children have also given competitive examinations. Although there were no incidents like paper leaks at that time, the current situation is very worrying. He said that the youth of the country are getting disappointed due to repeated paper leaks and their faith in the education system is wavering.
