Agartala, July 21 (IANS). Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha on Tuesday said that with the untimely demise of Director General of Police (DGP) Anurag, the state has lost an honest, efficient and dutiful police officer. He said that his commitment towards maintaining law and order and public safety will always be remembered.

Anurag’s body was found hanging under suspicious circumstances in the bathroom attached to his office at the state police headquarters in Agartala on Monday.

Expressing deep condolence on the demise of the DGP, the Chief Minister said that throughout his service life, Anurag displayed honesty, professional efficiency and devotion to duty, due to which he gained wide respect from his colleagues and the general public.

Speaking to the media after paying tribute, Manik Saha said, “His commitment towards ensuring public safety and maintaining law and order will always be remembered. In his untimely demise, the state has lost an honest, efficient, dutiful and dedicated police officer towards public service.”

He said that due to Anurag’s efficiency and honest leadership, the law and order situation in Tripura improved significantly. According to him, Anurag set an example of integrity, courage, professional competence and unwavering dedication towards public service throughout his career.

Describing his demise as an “irreparable loss” to the government and the police department, the Chief Minister said it would be extremely difficult to fill the void left by the senior IPS officer.

He said, “As long as Anurag was there, I was always confident that the law and order of the state was in safe hands.” The Chief Minister said that he had met Anurag during the passing out parade of Tripura Police on July 18 and at that time he was looking completely happy and normal.

Manik Saha said that a case of unnatural death has been registered in the matter and the investigation will be proceeded as per law. He also told that according to the preliminary post-mortem report, Anurag died due to hanging.

Expressing deep condolences to the bereaved family, the Chief Minister said that the family has suffered the biggest loss and prayed to God to give them the strength to bear this loss.

“His leadership, dedication to maintaining law and order and service to the public will always be remembered with respect and gratitude,” he said.

The Chief Minister said that Anurag’s legacy will continue to inspire future generations of policemen and citizens. He said that Anurag taught that true leadership is based on a sense of duty, sensitivity and selfless service.

Meanwhile, Governor Indra Sena Reddy Nallu, Chief Minister Manik Saha, several ministers, Chief Secretary Jitendra Kumar Sinha, Home Secretary Abhishek Singh, acting DGP G.S. Rao and other senior officials paid tribute to Anurag on Tuesday.

After the tribute programme, his mortal remains were taken to his native place at Baraut in Baghpat district of Uttar Pradesh via Odisha and Delhi along with family members and senior police officials, where his last rites will be performed on Wednesday morning.

The Tripura government on Tuesday declared one-day state mourning in honor of 1994 batch IPS officer Anurag. Anurag took over as DGP of Tripura on 17 May 2025. Earlier he was working as DGP (Intelligence) in the state.
