Bajaj Auto to launch its first electric motorcycle in FY28, the company will also increase production of Chetak electric scooter to meet the growing demand
Bajaj Auto has confirmed that its first mass-market electric motorcycle will be launched in India by FY28 (FY2027-28). Royal Enfield has introduced its electric bike lineup in India, while companies like Hero MotoCorp and TVS are also working on their own electric motorcycles. Apart from this, Ultraviolette Automotive, Revolt Motors, Oben Electric and Matter are already present in this segment.
Bajaj Auto Chief Financial Officer (CFO) Dinesh Thapar said during the company’s post-earnings call, “Work on our electric motorcycle is going on at a fast pace and if everything goes as per plan, it will be launched by FY28. Initially it will be launched in export markets, after which it will be launched in India.”
The company is also preparing to update its motorcycle range in the 125-160cc segment in the coming months. Bajaj Auto said that it is continuously expanding its electric vehicle portfolio. This will include electric scooters, electric three-wheelers, e-rickshaws and in future also electric motorcycles. According to the company, under the Delhi EV Policy 2026, new registrations of petrol and CNG two-wheelers are going to be banned from April 1, 2028, in view of which it has become necessary to bring electric motorcycles.
To meet the increasing demand for new electric scooters and motorcycles, the company is also increasing its manufacturing capacity by about 20%. The first 10% capacity will be expanded in the next 3-4 months, while the remaining 10% expansion will be completed by the end of the financial year or the first quarter of FY28.
Sales of Bajaj’s Chetak electric scooter are also increasing continuously. Its 1.30 lakh units have been sold in the first quarter of the current financial year. In view of the increasing demand and long waiting period, the company is preparing to increase its monthly production from 50,000 units to 60,000 units.
Dinesh Thapar said that the company is increasing production capacity to meet the increasing demand. He also said that the demand for motorcycles above 125cc is growing at almost double the speed of the market. In such a situation, Bajaj will also launch updated models of its Pulsar 125-160cc range in the coming months.
