National Broadcasting Day is celebrated every year on 23 July. This day is dedicated to honoring the beginning of radio broadcasting in India and its social contribution. On 23 July 1927, the Indian Broadcasting Company (IBC) started the country’s first radio broadcast from Bombay station. This historical event laid the strong foundation of modern communication system in India.

The Indian Broadcasting Service came into existence in 1930 and was named All India Radio on 8 June 1936. Later in 1956 it officially got the name Akashvani. In the last several decades, radio has made its strong reach from metropolitan cities to remote villages. Despite the digital age, even today radio is considered an effective communication medium reaching almost 99 percent of the country’s population due to its reliability and wide reach. Prime Minister Narendra Modi also chose radio as the medium for his popular program ‘Mann Ki Baat’, which further increased its relevance.
