Other Party Leaders Made Chief Minister in BJP: In the era of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah in the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), influential leaders from other parties have attained the top of power in their respective states in about six years. Be it about Himanta Biswa Sarma, who became the Chief Minister for the second time in Assam today, or about Manik Saha, who has been running the government in Tripura for four years, about Subhendu Adhikari, who became the CM in West Bengal three days ago, or about Samrat Chaudhary, who was promoted last month after being number 2 in the government in Bihar for two years. Among these four BJP leaders, Himanta Biswa Sarma was the first to join BJP and also became the Chief Minister. Himanta Biswa Sarma joined BJP on 28 August 2015. On August 23, five days before joining BJP, Himanta had met the then party president Amit Shah in Delhi and got the green signal for his entry. Himanta, who won the elections for the sixth consecutive time from Jalukbari Assembly seat of Kamrup Metropolitan District, won the first three elections from Congress and remained a minister in the Tarun Gogoi government from 2002 till he left the party in 2014.

Himanta, who held the number 2 position in the Gogoi government, had a desire to become CM, which did not seem to be fulfilled by staying in Congress after Gaurav Gogoi entered politics. After joining BJP, Himanta worked for BJP in the 2016 elections. BJP went straight from 5 seats won in 2011 to 60 seats and formed the first BJP government in Assam. In the 2021 elections, BJP again won 60 seats and Himanta Biswa Sarma became CM for the first time on 10 May 2021. After almost 6 years of joining BJP and if we add months, after 5 years and 9 months, Himanta sat on that chair in Assam, where apart from Gogoi, even Rahul Gandhi would have been an obstacle to reach if he was in Congress. In the 2026 elections, Himanta took BJP from 60 to 82 seats and has now become the Chief Minister for the second consecutive time.

In Bihar, Samrat Chaudhary became a minister in Rabri Devi government from Lalu Yadav’s party Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) without becoming MLA or MLC. Before leaving RJD and joining BJP, he also stayed in Nitish Kumar’s Janata Dal United (JDU) with his father and powerful leader of Bihar Shakuni Chaudhary. Shakuni was in Congress and Samata Party before RJD and after JDU also became the state president of HAM. Left politics after HAM’s defeat in 2015 elections. Samrat joined BJP on 11 June 2017. Then Bihar BJP president Nityanand Rai and Sushil Modi included Samrat in the BJP in the presence of UP Deputy CM Keshav Prasad Maurya. Samrat Chaudhary became the state vice president of BJP in 2018, Legislative Councilor (MLC) in 2020, and then became the party leader in the Legislative Council. Become state BJP president in 2023. When Nitish Kumar left the Grand Alliance and returned to the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) for the second time, he became the number 2 Deputy CM on 28 January 2024. Subhendu Adhikari followed his father Shishir Adhikari into politics from Congress. Shishir was a big leader of Congress and TMC and also became a minister in Manmohan Singh’s government at the Centre. After Shubhendu, his brother Divyendu Adhikari also became MLA and MP. After Congress, the Adhikari family did politics with Mamata Banerjee’s All India Trinamool Congress (TMC) for two decades. Shubhendu stayed with Mamata and became an MLA, MP and minister in the West Bengal government. Shubhendu’s entry into BJP was more powerful than Himanta and Samrat, because Amit Shah himself had gone to Medinpur to include him in the party. Shubhendu, who joined BJP on 19 December 2020, did not look back after that. In 2021, Shubhendu defeated the then CM Mamata Banerjee from Nandigram seat. To become CM, Mamta had to contest the by-election from Bhawanipur. For the next 5 years, Shubhendu weakened the credibility of Mamata Banerjee and TMC by raising the issue of hooliganism, illegal extortion in every work and appeasement of Muslims. Shubhendu defeated Mamata in Bhawanipur in the 2026 elections and also won the Nandigram seat. BJP demolished Mamata’s stronghold by winning more than two-thirds of the seats. On 9 May, Subhendu Adhikari became the 9th Chief Minister of West Bengal. Shubhendu also took almost 6 years from entry in BJP to becoming CM. If counted in months, it is 5 years and 5 months.

Tripura CM Manik Saha is also counted among those who became CM in about 6 years after joining BJP. Manik Saha, who joined BJP from Congress in 2016, was made the CM in place of Biplab Deb after 6 years in 2022. He was made CM again in 2023. Apart from Himanta Biswa Sarma, Samrat Chaudhary, Shubhendu Adhikari and Manik Saha, there are many leaders who have become CM after coming from other parties. Some changed sides while they were CMs and remained in office. Some came before the elections and became Chief Ministers. The wait for some took many years.
In Karnataka, Basavaraj Bommai, who joined BJP in 2008 from Janata Dal, was made the CM after 13 years i.e. in 2021. But in Manipur, N Biren Singh, who left Congress and joined BJP in 2016, got the post of CM only after the 2017 elections. Arunachal Pradesh CM Pema Khandu became the CM of the Congress government in July 2016, joined the People’s Party of Arunachal in September and became its CM and then joined the BJP in December and became its CM.
