Facebook is introducing a new way to help users identify whether they are talking to a real person or an AI-generated profile. The social media platform has launched ‘Facebook Verified’, a free verification badge. Users can find it after completing the selfie video check. This step has been taken at a time when artificial intelligence tools have made it easy to create fake profiles, real-looking pictures and automated conversations. Facebook says the purpose of this new badge is to make online conversations more trustworthy, especially where users connect with strangers.
Have to record a short selfie video
Unlike traditional verification badges typically associated with celebrities or paid subscriptions, ‘Facebook Verified’ is designed for ordinary users. To get this badge, eligible users have to record a short selfie video. Facebook will compare this video with the photo on the user’s profile to confirm that the account belongs to a real person.
The verification process is free and usually takes just a few minutes. However, users must meet Facebook’s trust and security requirements; Such as they should not have any history of fraud, scam or any kind of fraudulent behavior. This feature is currently available only to users aged 18 years and above whose accounts are in good standing. Facebook Verified will not be available for Pages or profiles that are using Professional Mode.
Badge will appear after verification
Once the account is verified, that badge will appear in the places where it is most important to know the person’s identity. Users will be able to see this badge on profiles, Facebook Marketplace listings, dating profiles and groups. Facebook is also planning to show this badge on feed posts in the future. The company says that users will have to complete the verification only once, after which this badge will be visible in the supported areas of Facebook without any subscription charge. For example, someone viewing a marketplace listing, chatting with a potential match on dating, or joining a group discussion will be able to see whether the account owner has completed the human verification process.
Verified badge is not a guarantee of trust
While the badge confirms that the account belongs to a real person, Facebook clarified that it does not mean the platform guarantees that user’s behavior. Verified accounts still must follow Facebook’s Community Standards and Commerce Policies. A real person may still violate platform rules, and verification does not serve as a security guarantee.
“The Facebook Verified badge means the profile is from a real person, someone who has completed selfie verification and meets our trust and safety standards,” Facebook said.
Facebook Verified is being rolled out gradually; First it will be launched in some select markets and then it will be expanded to other regions around the world. The company believes that as AI-generated content and profiles become more common, users need an easier way to differentiate between real people and fake (artificial) accounts.
