The deep partial lunar eclipse that will occur on the night of 27 and 28 August 2026 is going to be a very special event for astronomy lovers. During this time, about 96% of the Moon will come under the Earth’s deep shadow (Umbra), due to which it is also being called “96% Blood Moon”.
Why is it being called ‘blood moon’?
When direct sunlight is blocked by the Earth during a lunar eclipse, the Sun’s rays are bent through the Earth’s atmosphere. In this process, blue light scatters and red-orange light reaches the Moon. For this reason, the Moon appears red or copper in color, which is commonly called “blood moon”.
Why is this eclipse special?
According to scientists, this partial lunar eclipse will be extremely deep as up to 96% of the Moon will be covered in the Earth’s shadow. Compared to normal partial eclipses, this view will give the effect of an almost total lunar eclipse, making this event even more attractive.

This astronomical phenomenon will be visible in many parts of the world, especially:
Large parts of Asia, some areas of Europe, many countries of Africa, Australia and surrounding areas
