Importance of Matsya Jayanti
Tritiya Tithi (third day) of Shukla Paksha (waxing phase of the moon) of Chaitra month is celebrated as the birth anniversary of Lord Vishnu’s first incarnation—’Matsya Avatar’ (fish form). During Satya Yuga, when a terrible cataclysm threatened the world, Lord Hari took the form of a fish to protect King Satyavrata, Prajapatis and Saptarishis (seven sages). This auspicious day often coincides with Chaitra Navratri and Gangaur festival. On this occasion, special rituals are performed in Vishnu temples, and devotees reverently remember this protective form of the Lord.

Celebration of Gangaur Puja
The festival of Gangaur is celebrated with great enthusiasm in Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and Braj region of Uttar Pradesh. Here, ‘Gana’ refers to Lord Shiva, while ‘Gaur’ refers to Goddess Parvati. On this day, unmarried girls pray for a good life partner, while married women worship ‘Isar Ji’ (Lord Shiva) and ‘Gaura Mata’ (Goddess Parvati) for the long life and good health of their husbands. According to beliefs, observing a fast on this day—in which milk is consumed only once—results in *unbroken good fortune* (eternal marital happiness).

Women make beautiful idols of Gaura ji from clay, decorate them with jewellery, and perform the puja with traditional songs and strictly following the classical rituals. This festival symbolizes the spirit of unwavering faith and wishes for the well-being of the family.
