Bodh Katha: Opportunity and Prudence

Bodh Katha: Opportunity and Prudence

An ordinary man was going about his daily routine. The day was about to end, the sun had dimmed. Then on the way he saw a man with a serious and bright personality. There was amazing peace on his face and depth in his eyes. The stranger asked for water in a tired voice. Without asking any questions, without thinking about who was in front of him, the person moved his pot forward and quenched his thirst. The man’s voice changed as soon as he drank the water. He said, “Vatsa, you could not recognize me, but I am Yamraj. Today I had come to take your life. But this selfless act of yours has forced me to give you a chance.”

Saying this, Yamraj handed him a diary and said, “Whatever you write in it will become true. But remember, you have only five minutes.” The person’s mind was filled with curiosity and greed. He started turning the pages of the diary quickly. It was written on the first page that his neighbor was going to become a millionaire by winning the lottery. As soon as he read this, jealousy arose in his mind. He immediately wrote that the neighbor’s lottery should not be won.

It was written on the next page that his friend was going to win the election and become a minister. He couldn’t bear even this. He wrote that he should lose the election. In this way he kept turning one page after another and everywhere turning the bright future of others into darkness. Didn’t care about time. When he finally turned the last page, his own name was written there. His heart skipped a beat. As soon as he picked up the pen to write his destiny, Yamraj took the diary from his hand. Yamraj spoke in a serious voice, “Vatsa, your time has ended. The power that was given to you to shape your life, you wasted it in harming others.

He who misuses his opportunity becomes the cause of his own destruction. Now your end is certain.” On hearing this the man’s head bowed in shame and remorse. Tears started flowing from his eyes, but now time could not come back. This story teaches us that time, strength and opportunity given by God are extremely valuable. The person who utilizes his resources for the welfare of others is truly happy and blessed. The one who thinks ill of others ultimately spoils his own future.
