Jalaun. Jayanti Mata Temple, famous as Jalaun Devi, situated amidst the ravines on the banks of Yamuna in Jalaun district of Uttar Pradesh, still remains a living center of reverence, mystery and ancient history. This temple has special recognition in Bundelkhand region and devotees from far and wide come here for darshan and worship. The natural beauty, depth of the ravines and the calm flow of Yamuna make this place more divine. According to beliefs, the history of this temple is linked to the Mahabharata period.
It is said that Pandavas had reached this area during their exile and exile in Dwapar Yuga. At that time this entire area was surrounded by dense forests and ravines, where there was a suitable environment for meditation. Pandavas performed rigorous penance of Mother Chandi Devi here under the guidance of Maharishi Vedvyas. Pleased with his devotion, the Goddess appeared before him and blessed him with victory in the war against the Kauravas.
Due to the blessings of this “Jai”, this goddess became famous by the name of “Jayanti Mata”. The idol of Maa Jayanti installed in the temple is considered to be about 5000 years old. This ancient statue remains the center of faith of devotees even today. It is believed that the results of worship done here are manifold and every wish made with a true heart is fulfilled. Located on the banks of river Yamuna near village Kanjhari under Madhaugarh tehsil, this temple comes under the limits of Jalaun Khurd Gram Panchayat.
Being situated amidst ravines, its environment provides a very mysterious and spiritual experience. This area was once known as the infamous ravines of Chambal, but despite this the sanctity and importance of the temple always remained. At one time in history, this temple was also the center of faith for the notorious dacoits of Chambal. Many dacoits like Mansingh, Malkhan Singh and Phoolan Devi used to come here secretly to have darshan of the Mata and pray for their safety.
Local people believe that it was due to the grace of Mother Jayanti that they remained safe even in difficult situations. This is the reason why this temple situated amidst ravines remained safe even during that period. Many miraculous incidents related to the temple are also popular. Devotees say that the prayers offered here never go in vain. Many people have experienced positive changes in their lives and freedom from difficulties.
According to the priests of the temple, there is a wonderful feeling of Goddess Shakti here, especially at night, which many devotees have experienced. Jayanti Mata Temple is not limited to Jalaun only, but is a major center of faith for the people of many districts including Jhansi, Etawah, Auraiya, Kanpur, Hamirpur, Bhind, Morena and Gwalior. Hundreds of devotees reach here every day, whereas on the occasion of Navratri this number reaches thousands.
Block chief Kuthound Ajit Singh said that like every year, a grand event of “Maa Jalaun Devi Mahotsav 2026” is being organized here on the occasion of Chaitra Navratri and English New Year. From March 19 to March 25, a grand bhajan evening will be organized every day from 7 pm to 11 pm, in which famous bhajan singers from the country and the state will give their performances. Along with this, attractive tableaux will be the special attraction of the festival, in which various forms of Maa Durga will be depicted alive.
During the Mahotsav, a huge Bhandara will also be organized every day from 10 am to 4 pm from March 19 to March 27, in which thousands of devotees will receive Prasad. The temple complex is being given a grand look with colorful lights and decorations. According to the chief priest of the temple, Sarvesh Maharaj, this place is a Siddhapeeth, where Mother Jayanti herself is seated. Priest Madan Shukla says that the effect of the sadhana and puja done here is manifold and the mother fulfills every wish of her devotees.
In view of the huge crowd here during Navratri, the administration has made extensive preparations. According to Sub-District Magistrate Madhogarh Rakesh Kumar Soni, a Naib Tehsildar has been appointed in-charge and other officers will also keep constant monitoring. Area Officer Jalaun Shailendra Kumar Bajpai said that as part of security arrangements, police and PAC forces of many police station areas are being deployed so that the devotees do not face any inconvenience.
Jayanti Mata Temple, famous by the name of Jalaun Devi, has today become a unique confluence of faith, history, miracles and folk belief. From the stories of the Mahabharata period to the faith of the dacoits and the present day tradition of grand religious events – all these make it a unique and important pilgrimage site. With Chaitra Navratri Festival 2026, this Dham is once again going to be drenched with reverence, devotion and enthusiasm.
