According to Hindu calendar, this year Jyeshtha Adhik month is going to start from 17th May. It is considered a very special and auspicious month from the religious point of view. During this period, worship, devotion and charity have special importance.

Why does ‘Adhik Maas’ come?

The Hindu calendar is based on the movement of the Moon, while the Surya year is based on solar calculations. To maintain coordination between the two, an additional month is added every few years, called Adhik Maas.

It is also called “Malmas” and comes at an interval of approximately 32 months and 16 days. For this reason it is considered the 13th month in addition to the normal 12 months.

Adhik month is considered to be the favorite month of Lord Vishnu. The results of chanting, penance, charity and fasting done during this period are multiplied. Therefore it is considered extremely auspicious and a time for spiritual practice.

What to do in this month?

There is a tradition of performing some special religious activities in Adhik Maas –

Worship of Lord Vishnu and Shri Krishna, recitation of Vishnu Sahasranama, charity like donation of food, clothes and money, recitation of Geeta and bhajan-kirtan, fasting and adopting a restrained lifestyle.

What not to do?

This month is generally not considered suitable for new auspicious functions like marriage, housewarming or big business investment. However, there is no restriction on religious activities.
