Snan Purnima, celebrated on the day of Jyeshtha Purnima before the world famous Rath Yatra of Lord Jagannath, has special religious significance. In the year 2026, on 29th June, a grand Mahabhishek of Lord Jagannath, Lord Balabhadra and Goddess Subhadra will be done with the water of 108 sacred urns in Shri Jagannath Temple of Puri. After this divine ritual, Mahaprabhu does not appear to the devotees for 15 days. This period is called Anavasara (Anasara) period.
What is the significance of Snan Purnima?
On the day of Snan Purnima, Lord Jagannath, Balabhadra and Goddess Subhadra are enshrined at the Snan Mandap located in the temple premises. After this, amidst chanting of Vedic mantras, Mahabhishekam is performed with water from 108 sacred urns.
There is a religious belief that after such a huge anointment, the Lord gets fever. For this reason, he rests for a few days and during this time, his darshan in the temple remains closed for common devotees.
Why are darshan stopped for 15 days?
Lord Jagannath rests during the Anavasar period that starts after Snan Purnima. During this period, they are given special service, medicinal treatment and make-up. According to religious tradition, Ayurvedic medicines and special offerings are offered to the Lord so that he can become healthy.
For this reason, devotees do not get direct darshan for about 15 days.
What is the philosophy of youth?
After the end of Anavasar period, Lord Jagannath appears to the devotees for the first time. This is called youthful appearance or youthful appearance.
