According to Hindu beliefs, Shanidev is considered to be the giver of karma and the god of justice. He is the son of Suryadev and Sangya Devi. Their movements are considered slow and that is why their influence lasts for a long time. People definitely have fear regarding Saturn’s Sadesati and Dhaiya, but if we understand their nature then they are symbols of discipline and justice.
According to the legend, due to being unable to bear the glory of the Sun God, Sangya Devi left her idol Swarna in his place. Swarna discriminated against Sangya’s children. One day, in anger, Shanidev raised his foot to hit him, on which Swarna cursed him. Later, Suryadev reduced the curse and said that Shani will not be crippled, but will walk with a limp throughout his life. This is the reason why their speed is considered slow.
Another story is related to Hanuman ji. When Hanuman ji was engrossed in the meditation of Lord Rama, then Shanidev challenged him for war. Hanuman ji tied him with his tail and tortured him. Ultimately Shanidev accepted his mistake and promised that he would not trouble the devotees of Ram and Hanuman. His wounds were soothed by the oil given by Hanuman ji, since then the tradition of offering oil to Shanidev became popular.
The essence of these stories is that Shani Dev is a symbol of punishment as well as reform. They teach us to avoid anger and ego, to practice self-control and good deeds. Only true devotion and humility protects from their wrath and provides happiness and balance in life.
