Mythology: Origin of Sudarshan Chakra

There came a time when the oppression of demons on earth reached its peak. Not only humans were troubled by their terror, but it also became difficult for the gods to perform religious activities. The aim of the demons was to subdue not only the earth but also the heavenly world. Devraj Indra was worried, the power of the demons was increasing every day and the power of the gods was diminishing in front of him. Ultimately, all the gods of heaven under the leadership of Indra reached the shelter of Lord Vishnu and said in a distressed voice – “O Narayana, the wrath of the demons is increasing. Please free us from this crisis.” Lord Vishnu became serious after hearing the plight of the gods. He knew that it was not he himself who could solve this disastrous situation, but Lord Shiva. Vishnuji considered Shivji as his idol and Shivji considered Vishnuji as his favorite. Therefore, to protect the gods, Lord Vishnu decided to go to the Himalayan mountain ranges and perform penance for Lord Shiva.

Vishnuji started chanting the thousand names of Shiva. His resolution was to offer a lotus flower with each name. Absorbed in the fire of penance, he continued chanting each name and offering lotus. Seeing this amazing devotion, Lord Shiva thought in his mind – “Why don’t I test the devotion of my beloved today?” Thinking this, Shiva made a lotus flower invisible with his divine power.

Lord Vishnu, engrossed in penance, did not even realize this. When it came time to pronounce the last name of Sahastra names, they noticed that Kamal was one less. If the lotus is not offered, their resolution will also remain incomplete and the penance will be broken. But Lord Vishnu’s mind was not disturbed at all. Lord Vishnu is called lotus eye, so he decided to offer his eye in place of the lotus. Without any hesitation he dedicated one of his eyes to Lord Shiva.

Seeing this devotion and sacrifice of Lord Vishnu, Lord Shiva was extremely pleased and immediately appeared and said – “O Vishnu, I am extremely pleased with your devotion. Ask, do you want a boon?” Vishnuji humbly said – “Lord, all the gods and humans are in trouble due to the atrocities of the demons. Only you can give us an invincible weapon to end them. Please grant that boon.” Lord Shiva smilingly offered his supreme divine and invincible weapon Sudarshan Chakra to Vishnuji. With the power of this Chakra, Lord Vishnu destroyed all the demons and established the world again on the path of religion and peace. – Feature Desk
