Mahant Avidyanath Ji Maharaj also represented the Maniram Assembly and Gorakhpur Lok Sabha constituency four times by associating the tradition of public welfare of Nathpanth with religion as well as politics. This Rashtrasant will surely be remembered for ages to give a decisive stage to the movement for the construction of the temple on Shri Ram Janmabhoomi.
Born on 18 May 1919 in village Kandi in Garhwal (Uttarakhand), Mahant Avidyanath had a deep inclination towards religion, spirituality since childhood. His association was found in a detailed dimension in the world famous Gorakshpeeth of Nathpanth under the guidance of Mahant Digvijaynath. His duly initiated in Gorakshpeeth took place on 8 February 1942 and in the year 1969, Mahant Digvijaynath’s Ashwin Tritiya became the Mahant and Peethadhishwar of the Gorakhnath Temple on 29 September after Chir Samadhi. As the penetrating Peethadhishwar of yoga and philosophy, he expanded and expanded the ideals of his Gurudev’s public welfare and social harmony. This series continued uninterrupted till Ashwin Krishna Chaturthi was touched in 2014.
The contribution of three generations of Gorakshpeeth for the construction of the temple on the birthplace of Lord Shri Ram in Ayodhya is inscribed in the golden parties. Mahant Digvijaynath revolutionized the temple movement during his lifetime and after him, Mahant Avidyanath took command of it. In the nineties, the Shri Ram temple movement under his leadership got a holistic, comprehensive and decisive turn. The flame of the movement was ignited from village to village. Mahant Avaidyanath threaded saints, politicians and common people in the agitation as the chairman of Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Mukti Yagya Samiti and Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Construction High Power Committee. It is also a pleasant coincidence that after waiting for five centuries, the Shri Ram temple in Ayodhya has been constructed under the supervision of his disciple Yogi Adityanath.
Mahant Avidyanath was a Dharmacharya in real sense. He made the original heart of religion social harmony the purpose of his life. He launched a large campaign to end untouchability and high-low discrimination from Hindu society. As the President of the All India Year Avadhoot Bhesh Barahpant Yogi Mahasabha, Mahantji also connected saints from all over the country with his campaign. Due to his clear views, Mahant Awidyanath, who was very honorable in the saint society of the entire country, was very sad about the collective conversion of Dalit society in Meenakshipuram, South India. Such recurrence should not be in North India, that is why he also chose the path of politics along with religion. Their goal was to remove the evils of Hindu society and unite the whole society. Regarding this, he started a co -operative campaign in Dalit settlements where all the people beyond caste discrimination used to eat in a pang. Mahantji gave a nationwide message of social harmony by eating food with Sant Samaj in Domaraja’s house in Kashi. To promote social harmony, he put the first brick of Bhoomipujan of Ram temple at the hands of Dalit Kameshwar Chaupal.
Mahant Awidyanath used to give messages from the quotes of Lord Shri Ram and Goddess Durga to strengthen social harmony. Such messages were involved in his routine. Mahantashree used to explain to the people in practical way that Prabhu Shri Ram ate Shabri’s shoes, embraced Nishadraj, performed the last rites of Giddharaj Jatayu, befriended the forest dwellers during exile, then his thinking was the establishment of Samras Samaj. He used to say that the eight arms of Goddess Durga symbolize two or two arms from the four varnas of the society. If these four varnas of the society are united, then they too will be so strong like Goddess Durga that they will control any powerful. Just like Ashtabhuji Devi Durga rides the fastest and powerful creature on the lion.
Mahant Avidyanath also has a unique record in the field of politics. He represented Maniram Assembly seat five times (1962, 1967, 1969, 1974 and 1977) four times (1970, 1989,1991 and 1996) Gorakhpur Sadar Parliamentary seat. He was also prestigious as the Vice President and General Secretary of the All India Hindu Mahasabha.
