Chaturmas is considered to have special religious significance in Hindu religion. This period is considered auspicious for the worship, meditation and religious activities of Lord Vishnu. It is believed that during Chaturmas, Lord Vishnu goes into Yoga Nidra, hence many auspicious works are stopped at this time. When will Chaturmas 2026 start?
According to the Hindu calendar, Chaturmas begins with Devshayani Ekadashi. In the year 2026, Devshayani Ekadashi will be celebrated on 25 July 2026. Chaturmas will be considered as the beginning from this day. This period lasts till Devuthani Ekadashi, when Lord Vishnu wakes up from Yoga Nidra.
The four months of Chaturmas include the months of Sawan, Bhadrapada, Ashwin and Kartik. During this period, worship of Lord Vishnu, Lord Shiva and Gods and Goddesses is considered to have special significance.
What should be done in Chaturmas?
According to religious beliefs, a person should adopt a virtuous life during Chaturmas. It is believed that by doing some auspicious work during this period, one will attain virtue.
Worship Lord Vishnu and chant mantras daily. Read religious texts and listen to stories. Donate to needy people. Follow fasting and abstinence. Maintain cleanliness and positive environment in the house. Be healthy in your food and make your daily routine disciplined.
What things should be avoided in Chaturmas?

Auspicious activities like marriage, housewarming should be avoided. Tamasic food should not be consumed. One should stay away from anger, ego and negative thoughts. One should avoid behaving badly towards anyone. It is advised to avoid excessive luxuries and unnecessary expenses.
Importance of sacrificing something in Chaturmas
In religious traditions, giving up any thing or habit during Chaturmas is considered auspicious. Many people give up milk, oil, sweets, salt or any favorite food during this period. It is believed that renunciation increases control over the mind and leads to spiritual progress.
What to do in Udyapan after renunciation?
If a person has sacrificed something during Chaturmas, then after the completion of the period, there is a tradition of doing Udyapan for it. Lord Vishnu is worshiped with rituals in Udyapan.
Offer food to Lord Vishnu. Provide food to Brahmins or needy people. Donate as per your capacity. Finish the thing you had sacrificed with respect. Pray to God for your wishes and family’s happiness and prosperity.
