Why do we fear death?

Why do we fear death?

Death is the resting place of life, where the soul removes its fatigue and provides strength for new life. To remove fatigue, we take rest regularly. They get involved in daily work again with new strength and enthusiasm. There is neither any fear nor any kind of difficulty in going for rest period. In the absence of rest, the spent energy cannot be replenished.

The body becomes weak and incapable of labour. To get rid of the fatigue of the whole life and to gain strength for the future life, the period of rest in the form of death is equally necessary. Metabolic transformation becomes necessary because due to long periods of labor, the body is no longer capable of doing hard labour. Old torn clothes are replaced and new ones are worn. It is advisable to completely replace worn out machines.

There is neither any kind of obstinacy, nor attachment, nor any kind of fear in these changes. By becoming afraid of the new, of change or remaining attached to the old, one has to be deprived of the benefits that one gets from new clothes and things. The same applies to death.

Death is also necessary and useful so that the living being can enjoy new life and change. If we imagine the situation where the process of death would stop, we would realize how dull and boring life would be. A long life, an immortal body, would be like carrying a decrepit, emaciated corpse; old age, in the same way, appears to be such a dull burden. Even if the blessing of immortality is added to it then how much difficulty it will be.

Certainly no thoughtful person would want to accept physical immortality. Who would want to carry the burden of an incapable, infirm, decrepit body forever? Then why are we afraid of death? Why does attachment to the body persist? Considering these reasons, it becomes clear that fear occurs due to lack of real knowledge about the nature of death and life.

Our being is separate from the body – it is eternal, indestructible and immortal. If this awareness remains, there is no reason to be afraid of the possibility of death. There is a fear of considering the body as everything and considering the end of life with death. Therefore, the scriptures instruct that everyone should know and recognize their existence, and everyone should study the scriptures. -Shivanand Mishra
