Why is Mrityu Panchak in July considered inauspicious? Know how long its effect will last and the necessary precautions

In the scriptures of Sanatan Dharma, five days of every month are considered inauspicious. Astrology connects these inauspicious days with the transit of the Moon (moving from one zodiac sign to another). These five days are called ‘Panchak’. No auspicious or auspicious work is done in Sanatan Dharma during Panchak period. Pundits and astrologers advise taking special precautions at this time.

According to astrology, Panchak period occurs when the Moon passes through five specific constellations – Dhanishtha, Shatabhisha, Purva Bhadrapada, Uttara Bhadrapada and Revati – while moving from Aquarius to Pisces. In July Panchak is starting on 4th, which is Saturday. The Panchak starting on Saturday has been called ‘Mrityu Panchak’ in the scriptures; It is considered the most inauspicious of all Panchak periods.

**Time of Death Panchak (July 2026)**

According to ‘Drik Panchang’, Panchak will start at 12:48 AM on July 4 and end at 4:00 PM on July 8. Since it is falling on Saturday, this period has been named Mrityu Panchak.

**Precautions to be taken during Mrityu Panchak**

**Do not do any work related to wood:** Collecting wood or doing any work related to wood during Panchak is considered inauspicious; Therefore, avoid such activities.

**Do not get the roof repaired:** Do not get the roof repaired during Panchak. According to the scriptures, installing a roof at this time increases the risk of financial loss and domestic discord.

**Do not weave cot:** Weaving a cot (traditional bed) or buying a new bed is prohibited during Panchak. It is believed that doing these things brings disease and calamity to the house.

**Do not travel towards South:** Avoid traveling towards South during Mrityu Panchak. This direction is associated with Yama (god of death). Unless absolutely necessary, avoid any travel to the south during this period. The last rites are performed in a special way: If the last rites are to be performed during the ‘Panchak’ period, five effigies made of flour or ‘Kush’ grass should be prepared and placed near the dead body on the pyre. After this, like the dead body, these effigies should also be cremated as per the prescribed rituals.
