JSW Group has a joint venture partnership with SAIC’s MG Motor, yet the group is preparing to launch its own separate car brand. For this, a separate company named JSW Motors Limited has been formed. Once launched, it will be one of the newest car brands in India. After talks with several automakers, JSW has finally decided to start its independent automobile journey by partnering with China’s Chery Automobile.

According to a separate report by Autocar India, JSW’s first car will be a rebadged version of Chinese company Chery’s Jetour brand’s D-segment SUV T2. JSW Motors Limited will launch its first model in June. It will be a plug-in hybrid SUV (PHEV), whose estimated price is said to be around Rs 45 lakh.

The Jetour T2 measures 4,785 mm in length, 2,006 mm in width, 1,875 mm in height and has a wheelbase of 2,800 mm. Jetour markets it as an off-road SUV, so JSW may launch it in India to compete with the Toyota Fortuner. It has a ground clearance of 205 mm, approach angle of 28 degrees, departure angle of 30 degrees and the ability to wade in water up to 700 mm.

The Jetour T2 plug-in hybrid is sold in three variants in China. Its base variant has a 1.5-litre turbo petrol engine, which gives power of 154 HP and torque of 220 Nm. It comes with two electric motors, taking the total power to 221 HP and torque to 390 Nm. It has a 27.2 kWh LFP battery, which according to WLTC gives an electric range of up to 100 km.

The mid variant gets the same powertrain, but has a larger 43.24 kWh LFP battery, which increases the electric range to 162 km. The top variant gets a 1.5-litre turbo petrol engine with three electric motors, which gives a total power of 456 HP and torque of 700 Nm. It also has a battery of 43.24 kWh and according to WLTC it can run in EV mode for about 160 km.

Only the base variant of JSW is likely to be launched in India. The company will import this SUV as a CKD kit from the Jetour plant in Fuzhou (Fujian province) of China and assemble it at the factory in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, Maharashtra. Initial details are expected to be revealed in April, ahead of a launch in June.
