JSW MG Motor India’s new ADAPT platform will be used in future electric, hybrid, plug-in hybrid and range-extender electric vehicles
JSW MG Motor India has introduced its new ADAPT (Advance Drive Architecture Platform Technology) platform in India. The company claims that this is India’s first modular platform on which vehicles with different powertrains like electric (EV), hybrid (HEV), plug-in hybrid (PHEV) and range-extender electric vehicle (REEV) can be manufactured.
The company has also confirmed that a new electric car and a plug-in hybrid SUV based on this new platform will be launched in the Indian market by the end of FY 2026-27. MG is currently preparing to further strengthen its electric vehicle portfolio after the success of the Windsor EV.
MG will soon launch a plug-in hybrid SUV in India. It is believed that this SUV can be based on Wuling Starlight 560 sold in the international market. It will have a combination of petrol engine and big battery, due to which the car will be able to run for long distances only on electric power. After this, the petrol engine will work to charge the battery when needed. A new fully electric SUV can also be brought on this platform.
The ADAPT platform features a hybrid-specific petrol engine, new battery technology, India’s first 10-in-1 Intelligent Electric Drive Unit and the world’s first electromagnetic dedicated hybrid transmission. The 10-in-1 drive unit combines multiple electrical systems into a single unit, minimizing space and increasing efficiency.
The company says that the hybrid petrol engine used on this platform has been specially designed for electrified vehicles, so that it can provide better mileage and more thermal efficiency. It also has an intelligent energy management system, which automatically decides which mode will be best while driving.
Four driving modes have been provided in this platform, which work automatically according to the driving conditions. In Pure Electric Drive mode, the car runs at low speed only with the help of battery. Whereas in Series Hybrid Drive, the petrol engine produces only electricity, while the vehicle runs on the electric motor. During Parallel Hybrid Drive, when fast acceleration is required, both the petrol engine and electric motor together provide power. Whereas in Engine Direct Drive mode, the petrol engine supplies power directly to the wheels for better mileage on the highway.
This platform also supports Range Extender Electric Vehicle (REEV) technology. In this, the petrol engine works only as a generator, whereas the vehicle always runs on the electric motor. With the help of this technology, the car runs on electric motor most of the time. At the same time, when the battery charge starts decreasing, the system automatically works to increase the driving range, making it easier to cover long distances. MG says the new ADAPT platform will reduce development time for future vehicles and help deliver better range, charging capacity, refinement, safety and performance.
