New avatar of Mahindra XUV 7XO, company is testing, may be launched soon

To meet the stringent CAFE III emission norms that will come into effect from April 1, 2027, Mahindra is introducing a strong hybrid model of the XUV 7XO, which will be equipped with excellent mileage and self-charging technology.

Mahindra is preparing to further expand its SUV lineup and the company is going to bring new products in the market soon. XUV 7XO is one of these. A heavily camouflaged test mule of Mahindra XUV 7XO has been spotted on Indian roads recently. It is believed that this could be a strong hybrid version of the SUV. However, the company has not yet confirmed it officially. The test model seen in spy photos looks similar to the existing XUV 7XO. Its roofline, window design and overall silhouette of the body remain almost the same as before. In such a situation, it is believed that this time Mahindra is not designing but testing the new powertrain. This is the reason why it is being considered as a possible hybrid model.

Mahindra is bringing hybrid technology due to CAFE III rules

According to reports, Mahindra is working on hybrid versions of XUV 7XO and XEV 9E. The XUV 7XO hybrid has been codenamed W613 within the company and could be Mahindra’s first strong hybrid SUV. CAFE III (Corporate Average Fuel Efficiency) rules are also a major reason for Mahindra working on hybrid technology. These new emission standards are to come into effect from April 1, 2027.

Under these, car manufacturing companies will have to meet more stringent fleet emission targets than before. Apart from this, strong hybrid vehicles also get regulatory benefits under Volume Derogation Factor (VDF). Due to this, hybrid vehicles help in improving the company’s total fleet emission figures more than traditional petrol and diesel models.

Strong hybrid system may be available

It is expected that the XUV 7XO Hybrid will get a traditional strong hybrid system. It will have an electric motor and battery pack along with the petrol engine. This system will be capable of running the SUV only on electric power at low speed or light load, which will save fuel and get better mileage. There will be no need for external charging because the battery itself keeps charging during driving.

The company did not give information about technical specifications

The XUV 7XO is already based on the Internal Combustion Engine (ICE) platform and hence it is considered a little easier for Mahindra to include a strong hybrid system in it. Although the company has not yet shared the technical specifications, but its system can work like strong hybrid cars like Honda City e:HEV, Toyota Urban Cruiser Hybrid and Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara. If this SUV is launched next year, it will not only help Mahindra comply with the stringent CAFE III norms, but will also give customers the option of a new premium hybrid SUV with better mileage and lower fuel consumption. At present, all eyes are on Mahindra’s official announcement, which may reveal the real identity of this test mule.
