Electric car sales cross 15,000 units in September 2025, more than double last year due to festive season
Last month proved to be a turning point for India’s electric vehicle industry. Additional discounts and the beginning of the festive season led to a strong increase in sales as expected. Sales of both passenger cars and two-wheelers witnessed a sharp growth, which shows that electric vehicles are no longer limited to early adopters but are gradually becoming the choice of the common people.
In the passenger EV sector, total sales crossed 15,000 units, more than double that of last year. Tata Motors took the first position by registering total sales of 6,216 units, a huge growth of 62 per cent compared to the same period twelve months ago. Its Nexon EV and Punch EV have been major contributors to this and these renowned cars also topped the PV sales charts.
JSW MG Motor’s total sales reached 3,912 units, three times more than last year’s performance. Windsor EV has been receiving good response from the customers ever since its launch in the market and has been maintaining its leading position at the top for the last several months. Mahindra & Mahindra has sold 3,243 units, up from just 475 units last year.
Electric cars like XEV 9e and BE 6 have sold well since their launch, as expected. In the electric vehicle sector, companies like BYD India, Kia, Hyundai, BMW, Mercedes-Benz and Tesla have also contributed. The presence of these vehicles in the premium segment is significant as it will provide more choices to buyers and gradually lead to better quality and higher standards in the category.
The number of two-wheelers in the adoption of electric vehicles was the highest. Their sales reached 1,04,220 units, which is 15 percent more than the same month last year. TVS Motor Company remained on top with 22,509 units followed by Bajaj Auto with 19,580 units. Ather Energy, Ola Electric and Hero MotoCorp have also gained a significant share of the overall market.
Attractive models along with government incentives and growing charging networks have further fueled this growth. Taking advantage of this, all manufacturers are planning to launch new models at different prices in the next few years.
