Honda plans to launch its first electric SUV globally in FY 2026–27, with India and Japan being the key markets
Honda Cars India has started testing of its upcoming electric SUV Honda 0 α from today. This model will be the company’s first fully electric car in India. Public road testing of this prototype has been started from Tapukara, Rajasthan, where the company’s manufacturing plant is also located. Many senior officials of the company were present on this occasion, including President and CEO Takashi Nakajima.
During this testing, the SUV will be driven in different parts of the country to test its performance in different road and weather conditions. This model was first presented as a concept at the Japan Mobility Show 2025 last year. This electric SUV is an important part of the company’s new generation EV strategy and is being developed for several global markets including Japan.
Its production version could be introduced internationally around 2027 and India could be among the first markets where it will be launched. During the testing, engineers will examine its ride comfort, handling, efficiency, durability and reliable performance in different driving conditions. Apart from this, it will also be tested in difficult weather conditions like extreme heat and monsoon. Also, it will be charged on different charging networks.
Talking about design, Honda 0 α has been designed on the basis of the company’s “Thin, Light and Wise” engineering philosophy. Its look is quite modern and aerodynamic. The testing prototype also shows some changes compared to the concept model, including a larger and wider grille section, different lighting and a concept-like bumper finish.
Apart from this, design elements like wide wheel arches, high pillars, long bonnet, integrated turn signal in ORVM and dual-tone wheels are also seen in it. Due to the company’s “Thin” packaging technology, the cabin can be made thinner but more spacious. This electric SUV will likely be offered with two battery pack options and its driving range could be more than 500 km on a single charge.
Speaking on the occasion, Takashi Nakajima said, “Starting public road testing across India is an important step in the company’s electrification journey as India has diverse road and weather conditions. Hence, it is important to thoroughly test the new electric SUV in real-world conditions to provide customers with a reliable, comfortable and easy-to-use EV.”
