Due to strict CAFE 3 rules, Toyota has to focus on petrol and hybrid options instead of diesel in its MPV vehicles.
India, Indonesia and the Philippines are among the last global markets where the Toyota Innova Crysta is still available for sale and is being sold alongside the Toyota Innova Hycross. According to media reports, 2026 could be the last year of sale of Innova Crysta in India.
Globally introduced in 2015, the Innova Crysta is the second generation of the Innova series and completed 10 years last year. In India, Toyota Kirloskar Motor (TKM) launched it in 2016 and now the company is preparing to discontinue it by the beginning of 2027.
Initially the Innova Crysta was offered with petrol and diesel engines, with manual and automatic gearbox options. However, before the arrival of the third generation Innova Hycross, Toyota discontinued the petrol engine and automatic transmission variants. Since then, the Innova Crysta has been offered primarily to fleet and commercial customers, with a 2.4-litre 2GD-FTV turbo diesel engine and a 5-speed manual gearbox.
This diesel engine was earlier compliant with BS-IV emission standards, which was later updated to BS-VI Phase-1 and BS-VI Phase-2. However, the company considers its chances of further growth to be low. The CAFE 3 (Corporate Average Fuel Efficiency) standards, which will come into effect from April 2027, are putting pressure on automakers for better mileage and lower CO₂ emissions.
The Innova Crysta’s heavy ladder-frame platform and diesel engine make it difficult to meet these standards, leaving Toyota with no concrete option but to discontinue it. Earlier, Toyota wanted to discontinue it early, but due to the problems related to supply of parts and continuous demand of Innova Hycross, its sale was continued. This time, however, the possibility of its closure is considered almost certain.
Innova Crysta price in India ranges from Rs 18.65 lakh to Rs 25.36 lakh (ex-showroom). At the same time, the price of Innova Hycross is Rs 18.05–20.35 lakh in petrol variant and Rs 25.90–31.89 lakh in hybrid variant (ex-showroom). Following the discontinuation of the Innova Crysta, Toyota may have to rethink the pricing of the HyCross Hybrid to maintain demand.
