Vientiane A major meeting is going to be held today on maritime dispute and Myanmar crisis during the ASEAN summit. Top diplomats of Southeast Asian countries have convened a meeting with their powerful dialogue partners today as part of a three-day regional dialogue in the Lao capital amid growing tensions over territorial claims in the South China Sea and intensifying fighting in Myanmar. In this meeting, allies of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), including the United States, China, Russia, Japan, India and Australia, will strengthen their ties and discuss key security issues and other regional matters.
US Secretary of State Antony Blinken arrived in the Lao capital Vientiane on Saturday to meet ASEAN foreign ministers. He is also expected to meet his Chinese counterpart Wang Yi on the sidelines of the meeting. Lao Foreign Minister Selumxay Kommasith, opening the day’s first meeting with China, Japan and South Korea, said he hoped the cooperation framework called ‘ASEAN Plus Three’ would “continue to promote our regional integration and economic resilience and ensure that our supply chains remain intact.”
There is a big dispute over the South China Sea
ASEAN member countries Vietnam, Philippines, Malaysia and Brunei have a dispute with China over the sovereignty of the South China Sea. China often claims its right over the entire South China Sea. At the same time, in Myanmar, the army ousted the elected government of Aung San Suu Kyi from power in February 2021 and crushed many non-violent demonstrations demanding the restoration of democratic rule, due to which violence and humanitarian crisis are increasing in the country.
