Washington. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has said that America wants to play a bigger role in meeting India’s growing energy needs. Supporting India’s strategy to diversify energy sources, he said that deeper cooperation in the energy sector between India and the US can further strengthen the long-term energy security of both countries. In an exclusive interview with news agency at the White House, Rubio said Washington is well positioned to support India’s growing energy needs as the two countries deepen their strategic partnership. Rubio said, “I think obviously India has been focused on diversifying its energy sources for a very long time and so that trend will continue and we certainly want to be a part of that. We think we have some solutions around that.”
Rubio linked the issue to US President Donald Trump’s efforts to reduce tensions in the Middle East and stabilize global energy markets. He said, “The President has given peace in the Middle East a chance because he wants more fuel to come to the market for our allies.”
Rubio emphasized that India’s long-term energy security will depend on maintaining a diverse supply base. “I think the long-term solution is really to diversify their supply,” he said.
The US Secretary of State also pointed to Venezuela as a possible future source of crude oil for India and said that the US is working to increase Venezuela’s production capacity.
Rubio said, “I know that India is talking not only to the US, but also to Venezuela. We are working very closely to increase their production capacity.”
He said that India’s refining capacity has given it a special place to process Venezuelan crude. India is one of the few countries in the world that has the capacity to refine Venezuelan heavy crude. So we will try to make it easier as well.
Rubio said energy is one of the many areas where Washington and New Delhi have common strategic interests.
He said, “India is the largest democracy in the world and America is the oldest democracy in the world. I think we have a lot of similarities and we can work together in many areas.”
Rubio cited the economy, supply chain, critical minerals, energy, security and freedom of navigation as areas in which the two countries are continuing to deepen cooperation. “These are all issues that bind us together. We are united on many subjects,” he said.
Rubio also highlighted the contribution of the Indian-American community to the relationship and said, “You also have a very strong Indian American community, which is an additional connection between our countries.”
India is one of the world’s fastest growing energy consumers and has continuously increased its imports of crude oil and liquefied natural gas to meet growing domestic demand. Diversifying energy supplies has become a key part of New Delhi’s strategy to increase energy security by reducing dependence on any single source.
Energy cooperation has emerged as an essential pillar of the India-US strategic partnership. Along with growing trade in oil and LNG, both countries have expanded cooperation in civil nuclear energy, clean energy technologies, essential minerals and strong supply chains as part of their broader economic and strategic engagement.
