Lucknow. Yogi government has taken another big step towards giving new heights to women safety and empowerment in Uttar Pradesh. Under the ‘Safe Mobility Programme’, an army of women e-rickshaw pilots is being prepared in the state, so that girls and women will be able to get safe, accessible and respectable transportation to school, workplace and other important places. Under this scheme, initially 1000 e-rickshaws are being provided to women of self-help groups. This facility has been started in Ayodhya, Gorakhpur, Varanasi, Kaushambi and Jhansi, while it will be started soon in Lucknow, Prayagraj, Mirzapur, Bhadohi, Sonbhadra, Deoria, Lakhimpur Kheri and Sitapur. This initiative of Yogi government is also special because it is directly related to women’s safety. Now e-rickshaw service operated by women drivers is emerging as a better solution for women and girls in rural areas.
This program, which is being run with the technical support of Development Alternatives under the Uttar Pradesh State Rural Livelihood Mission, has given effective results so far. 119 women in five districts have been made entrepreneurs by giving them e-rickshaws. At the same time, 629 women have been given driving training and 244 women have been provided driving licenses. The women associated with this initiative are now not only driving vehicles, but are also becoming the economic backbone of their families. The fact that the average annual income of women associated with the scheme has reached more than Rs 3 lakh further strengthens the success of this model.
The impact of ‘Safe Mobility’ is not limited to roads only. This will make it easier for daughters to access school, will make the journey of working women safe, will create new employment opportunities in villages and will make women of self-help groups a new example of self-reliance.
This initiative, which has a simultaneous impact on all three fronts – women’s safety, respectable transportation and self-employment, is giving a new identity to Uttar Pradesh. This is the reason why UP now seems to be leaving its own mark as a model state in women’s safety and this new army of women e-rickshaw pilots is preparing to change the socio-economic scenario of the villages.
