Chandigarh, December 27 (). Amidst the harsh cold, Punjab Forest and Wildlife Conservation Department on Saturday said that special measures have been taken to ensure comfortable and safe environment to the animals and birds at Mahendra Chaudhary Zoo in Chhatbir.

He informed that heaters and heat convectors have been installed in the night shelters of all tigers, leopards, lions and other wild cats.

All windows and open spaces have been covered with polythene or fiber sheets and a thatched roof has been made. Special temperature control arrangements have been made for the animals.

He said that for the herbivorous animals, temporary shelters or huts have been made in all the enclosures with the help of wires and ropes, and black tarpaulin has been installed on the roof so that water does not enter inside during rains.

Paddy straw and wheat husks have been laid down to provide a comfortable floor for all herbivorous animals.

He said that all the bird cages have been well covered with fibrous clothes, jute mats and polythene sheets to protect them from cold and winter rains. All the birds have been provided with bedding of paddy straw, wheat husk and rice husk to make warm nests.

At the same time, the front cover of the bird cages is foldable so that it can be opened for sunlight when needed. All pheasant cages are equipped with a structure of grass, paddy and canna to provide a comfortable environment.

Along with this, oil-fin heaters have been installed which do not affect the natural humidity of the cages. Also, wheat bran, dry leaves and heavy blankets are kept in all the cages of reptiles, which provide comfort to the reptiles. Special UV lamps have been installed in the reptile section.
